The Submarine Boundaries of Mount Etna’s Unstable Southeastern Flank

چکیده

Coastal and ocean island volcanoes are renowned for having unstable flanks. This can lead to flank deformation on a variety of temporal spatial scales ranging from slow creep catastrophic sector collapse. A large section these flanks is often below sea level, where information the volcano-tectonic structure ground limited. Consequently, kinematic models that attempt explain measured onshore associated with instability poorly constrained in offshore area. Here, we determine locations morpho-tectonic structures boundaries submerged southeastern Mount Etna (Italy). The integration new marine data (bathymetry, microbathymetry, seismicity, reflection seismic lines) published seafloor geodesy, allows identifying lineament north Catania Canyon as southern lateral boundary high level confidence. northern distal (seaward) less clear because no microbathymetric or geodetic available. Hypotheses their presented. Geophysical imaging suggests Timpe Fault System shallow second-order likely results extensional within moving flank. Evidence active uplift compression upslope amphitheater-shaped depression along subsidence Giarre Wedge block observed leads us propose this rotational slump, which moves top large-scale instability. shoreline-crossing structural assessment may now inform improve models.

Microbiostratigraphy of Middle Eocene ShahbazanFormation at the southeastern flank of Chenar Anticline,Lurestan Basin, Sw Iran

In this research, biostratigraphy related to the carbonate succession of the Shahbazan Formation at the southeastern flank of Chenar anticline, Lurestan Basin, is discussed. A study of large benthic foraminifera from the 294 mthick Shahbazan Formation led to the identification of two Middle Eocene biozones: Somalina sp. Zone, Nummulites-Alveolina Assemblage Zone. The age of the Shahbazan Format...

Closed Internal Degloving of the Flank

Originally described in 1853 by Dr. Morel-Lavellee, closed internal degloving injuries represent an important, althoughuncommon, source of morbidity in trauma patients. These injuries are typically the result of a shearing or crushing force thattraumatically separates the skin and subcutaneous tissue from the underlying fat. This results in disruption of perforatingblood vessels and lymphatics,...

The Influence of Open Versus Periodic Alongshore Boundaries on Circulation Near Submarine Canyons

It is impractical to create gridded numerical models of coastal circulation with sufficient resolution around small topographic features, such as submarine canyons, and still have the alongshore boundaries placed beyond the decay distance of coastal trapped waves. Two solutions to this problem are to make the alongshore boundaries either open or periodic. Numerical simulations were performed wi...

Fractal Basin Boundaries, Long-Lived Chaotic Transients, and Unstable-Unstable Pair Bifurcation

In this paper we consider a new type of bifurcation to chaotic motion. This bifurcation is characterized by the simultaneous appearance of a pair of unstable fixed points or periodic orbits, a, fractal (i.e., nondifferentiable) basin boundary, and a chaotic attractor (also commonly called a strange attractor). Just prior to this type of bifurcation, transient behavior with a chaotic character c...

The 1980 pressure response and flank failure of Mount St. Helens (USA) inferred from seismic scaling exponents

The cataclysmic 18 May 1980 eruption at Mount St. Helens was preceded by intense seismic activity marking the mechanical response of the volcanic edifice to interior pressurisation. This seismicity is analysed to yield the temporal change in the seismic scaling exponent, D, inferred from the seismic b-value, that in-turn is related to the seismic moment of an earthquake. Time evolution of D pre...
